Titles in each group: Commissioning: commissioning agent, commissioning engineer, commissioning technician, Commissioning agent: commissioning agent, Critical facilities: critical facilities engineer, critical facilities technician, Controls and BMS: controls technician, BMS technician, building automation technician and Data center technician: data center technician. Commissioning agent is a subset of the commissioning column. "1K+" and "1.5K+" are LinkedIn's capped displays. Tracked and under construction are counts from our regional trackers on their last review date, which are curated lists of announced projects, not a census.

Reading

A current title is a choice, so these are counts of people who present themselves as doing the work, in a metro LinkedIn assigns from their profile location. The same work is titled several ways: commissioning agent, commissioning engineer, commissioning technician, and others this count does not include, such as commissioning manager or Cx lead. The three-title group is the wider measure; the single title commissioning agent is the narrow one.

A low local count does not mean a project goes unstaffed. Commissioning crews often travel between sites, so the people working a Columbus project may live elsewhere. Posted commissioning pay, which is national, is on the commissioning pay page.

Method and limits

  • Source: LinkedIn Sales Navigator people search on November 4, 2026, Current job title filter with the exact titles listed above (LinkedIn matches the title field, with its spelling correction on), Geography filter set to the metro region named in the table. The count is the result total LinkedIn displayed.
  • Each person is counted once per group; a member with two matching titles is one result. Headlines, past titles and "Cx" abbreviations are not matched, so the counts are floors for people who do the work.
  • LinkedIn's regions are wider than our market names. The Washington DC-Baltimore region covers Northern Virginia and Baltimore; the Portland region covers Hillsboro.
  • Chief engineer was searched and dropped: the title is common in hotels, shipping and broadcast and does not identify data center staff.
  • Project counts are from our regional trackers, which list announced projects we have sourced to a public record. They are not a count of every project in the metro, and under construction is the stage on the tracker's last review date.
  • Nothing here estimates headcount at any site or company.
  • The full table is available as a CSV file, one row per metro with each count as a number and as LinkedIn displayed it.

Questions

How many commissioning agents are there in the United States?

696 LinkedIn members in the United States held the current title commissioning agent on November 4, 2026. 140 of them, about 20 percent, were in the nine data center metros we track. The count covers that exact title only, so commissioning engineers and technicians who do the same work are not included.

How many commissioning agents are there in each data center market?

Counting LinkedIn members whose current title is exactly "commissioning agent" on November 4, 2026: Dallas-Fort Worth 34, Northern Virginia 32, Atlanta 19, Hillsboro 17, Phoenix 15, Salt Lake City 13, San Antonio 5, Columbus 3 and Chicago 2. The United States as a whole showed 696. Many people who do the work title themselves commissioning engineer or commissioning technician; the wider commissioning group runs from 52 in San Antonio to 273 in Northern Virginia.

Which data center market has the thinnest commissioning bench?

By LinkedIn current title, San Antonio (52 across the three commissioning titles) and Salt Lake City (61). Columbus has the most tracked projects under construction (5) and 3 members titled commissioning agent.

Where do these counts come from?

LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Current job title filter set to the exact titles listed under each group, Geography filter set to LinkedIn's metro region, read on November 4, 2026. They count people who chose that title for their current role, not everyone who does the work, and LinkedIn caps large displays at "1K+" or "1.5K+", shown here as written.
