Role · Commissioning Agent (CxA)
Commissioning agent: the scarcest seat on the critical path.
A commissioning agent verifies that the electrical and mechanical systems in a data center actually perform as designed, from factory witness through integrated systems testing at full load. It is the hardest seat in infrastructure hiring because the qualifying experience only exists on projects that have already energized, and the people who have it are booked out a year ahead.
What a commissioning agent (cxa) actually does
Writes and executes commissioning scripts across Level 1 through Level 5, witnesses factory acceptance testing on switchgear, UPS and generators, runs functional performance testing, coordinates integrated systems testing with load banks, tracks and closes issues, and produces the turnover documentation the owner accepts the building on.
What controls search pace
This is the seat most likely to disrupt a hiring plan, and the one most worth scoping before the requisition is formally approved. Candidate availability is tied to project completion windows and travel terms.
- L1 factory witness and L2 site acceptance
- L3 pre-functional and functional performance testing
- L4 integrated systems testing at design load
- L5 sustained load and pull-the-plug scenarios
- Issues log ownership and closure
- Turnover package and owner acceptance documentation

Exact titles we place in this discipline.
Titles differ by operator, GC and owner. These are the variants this guide covers, so a search brief can be matched to whichever label your organization uses. Linked titles have their own page with pay, boundaries and screening notes.

- Commissioning Manager
- Commissioning Engineer (electrical or mechanical)
- Field Commissioning Technician

- IST Lead
Target markets
Where we recruit this seat.
Commissioning is a travel discipline. Candidates are hired to a home airport rather than a market, so every U.S. build region is in scope regardless of where the candidate lives.
Compensation
Commissioning Agent (CxA) pay bands, 2026.
Directional planning ranges for full-time U.S. roles, used to sanity-check an approved range. They are not published survey figures and they are not an offer recommendation.
| Level | Base range | Total cash | What the level means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commissioning technician / field engineer | $80,000 - $110,000 | $95,000 - $130,000 | Executes scripts under a lead. Per diem and travel pay are a large share of total. |
| Commissioning agent | $115,000 - $155,000 | $135,000 - $180,000 | Runs levels independently, owns the issues log, faces the owner. |
| Senior CxA / commissioning manager | $150,000 - $195,000 | $175,000 - $230,000 | Owns IST on a live program, manages a team of agents, signs turnover. Supply is tighter than demand, so counteroffers land above band. |
| Director of commissioning | $180,000 - $240,000 | $210,000 - $300,000 | Program-level accountability across multiple sites and vendors. |
- Bands are directional planning ranges for 2026 U.S. roles, not survey data. Confirm against your own offers before using them in an approval.
- Per diem, travel premium and vehicle allowance can add 15 to 30 percent for traveling agents. Owner-side roles pay less cash but win on being home.
- Owner-side and hyperscale commissioning roles compete with consultancies mainly on travel load, not base. That is the lever most employers under-use.
- Electrical-heavy CxAs price above mechanical-heavy CxAs in most markets because switchgear and IST experience is rarer.
By market
How the band moves by location.
Local supply, not cost of living, is usually what moves the number in infrastructure hiring.
Deepest CxA bench in the country and the highest competition for it; expect top-of-band and fast decisions.
Reasonable local bench plus a strong travel-agent population using DFW as a hub.
Active program pipeline; most agents are imported or traveling in.
Very thin local bench. Most hires relocate or fly in, so travel terms decide the search.
Growing bench, still commonly supplemented from the traveling pool.
Screening
How we assess this seat.
- Ask which levels they have personally run versus supported. Many candidates say Level 5 and mean they were on site while somebody else ran it.
- Ask what failed during their last IST and how the issue was closed. Real IST experience always has a failure story.
- Confirm whether they wrote scripts or executed somebody else's.
- Establish travel reality with a number: nights away per month they will actually accept, not what they will tolerate for a quarter.
- Check owner-facing exposure. A CxA who cannot hold a room with the owner during a failure is a different, cheaper hire.
Failure modes
Where these searches go wrong.
- Starting the CxA search at the same time as the rest of the team. It should start first, well before the rest of the team.
- Assuming a mechanical CxA can carry electrical IST, or vice versa.
- Treating travel as a detail. It is the single biggest reason offers get declined in this discipline.
- Comparing a consultancy base against an owner-side base without normalizing per diem and travel pay.
Method
How the search runs.
- Step 01
Calibrate
A written role brief, an agreed scorecard, and a market reality check on scope, comp and location before outreach starts.
- Step 02
Map
AI-assisted mapping across AI infrastructure companies, operators, EPCs and OEMs, layered on a network built one conversation at a time.
- Step 03
Engage
Direct, human outreach with weekly reporting on volume, response quality and the objections we are hearing.
- Step 04
Validate
Structured screens against the scorecard, written candidate cases including risks, and comp expectations on the record.
- Step 05
Close
Offer strategy, counteroffer exposure assessment, and resignation and relocation support through the start date.
- Step 06
Transfer
Your team keeps the pipeline, research files, messaging and comp data. The work stays with you when the engagement ends.
FAQ
Commissioning Agent (CxA) questions.
- What is a commissioning agent's salary?
- Directionally $110,000 to $150,000 base for a standalone CxA in 2026, and $130,000 to $175,000 total once per diem and travel pay are counted. Senior agents and commissioning managers run well above that. These are planning bands, not published survey figures.
- Why is commissioning talent so hard to find?
- The qualifying experience only accrues on projects that have already energized, so the bench grows at the speed of completed programs rather than the speed of demand. Every operator, EPC and consultancy is drawing from the same few thousand people.
- How much travel should we expect to offer?
- Consultancy roles commonly run 50 to 100 percent travel. If your role is site-fixed, say so in the first line of the outreach, because it is a genuine differentiator worth more than a small base increase to a large part of this pool.
- Can we hire a CxA from outside data centers?
- Sometimes, from pharma, semiconductor fab or healthcare commissioning, where the rigor around scripts and documentation is comparable. The gap is usually electrical distribution depth and load bank testing at data center scale.
- How early should we start the search?
- Work backward from energization. For a first-time site, the commissioning lead should be scoped before equipment arrives, with travel terms and authority clear before outreach starts.
