October 2026 study
Military veterans in data center commissioning
Navy nuclear technicians spend years running, testing and signing off on reactor plant electrical and mechanical systems, which is close to what a commissioning team does at Level 4 and Level 5. Of 42 data center commissioning postings we read, 1 names military experience as qualifying. We map the military trades to commissioning roles and list the programs that already bring veterans into data centers.

Findings
- 33 of 42 commissioning postings mention veterans. 31 of the 33 do so only in equal opportunity language such as "protected veteran status".
- 1 posting, from a commissioning firm, names military experience as qualifying: "Candidates with commensurate experience gained from military service will be considered and are highly encouraged to apply." 1 more encourages veterans to apply in its recruiting statement.
- 0 of 42 mention Navy nuclear training, SkillBridge or a security clearance.
- 22 of 42 list a degree requirement, and 17 of those accept experience instead. 5 require a degree with no substitute stated, which rules out veterans without one before anyone reads their service record.
- We found 6 veteran or SkillBridge programs for data center roles, including Microsoft's and Amazon's and two at commissioning firms. None of the 42 postings points to one.
- Over 200,000 servicemembers (active and reserve component) transition from active duty to civilian life every year, according to the Congressional Research Service, June 2024, citing the Defense Department.

Navy nuclear ratings
The Navy's three enlisted nuclear ratings train for about 18 months before their first sea tour: six months of A School, six months of Naval Nuclear Power School and six months of prototype training on an operating reactor, about 18 months before the first sea tour. Duties below are as the Navy describes them; the commissioning fit is our reading.
| Rating | Navy duty | Commissioning fit |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics Technician, Nuclear (ET(N)) | Operates and maintains the electronic systems that run the ship's nuclear reactor. | Electrical and controls commissioning: instrumentation, controls, BMS and EPMS checkout, functional testing |
| Electrician's Mate, Nuclear (EM(N)) | Operates the ship's electrical power generation systems and installs, tests and repairs electrical equipment, breakers and circuits. | Electrical commissioning: switchgear, UPS, generators and breaker testing through Level 4 and Level 5 |
| Machinist's Mate, Nuclear (MM(N)) | Operates and maintains steam turbines and reduction gears, plus auxiliary equipment such as refrigeration and air conditioning. | Mechanical commissioning: chillers, CRAH and CRAC units, pumps and cooling water systems |
The overlap is in the habits commissioning depends on: following a written procedure step by step, logging readings, working under lockout and tagout, and signing off on a system before it carries load. The gap is data center equipment such as UPS systems, CRAH units and BMS platforms, so the first commissioning role often starts at technician or junior engineer level, and civilian credentials such as NFPA 70E come with it.
Other military trades
The O*NET Military Crosswalk maps these military occupations to the civilian electrical and power occupations commissioning teams hire from.

Installations
Large installations in or near the markets we track, with the figure each installation's own site states.
| Market | Installation | As stated |
|---|---|---|
| San Antonio | Joint Base San Antonio | 80,000 members; supports more than 250,000 personnel |
| Columbus | Wright-Patterson AFB | Over 38,000 employees, military, civilian and contractor |
| Salt Lake City | Hill AFB | 27,000 active duty, civilian and contractor personnel |
| Phoenix | Luke AFB | About 4,830 military members and DoD civilians |
| Atlanta | Dobbins Air Reserve Base | 16 miles northwest of Atlanta; more than 2,000 reservists and civilians |
| Chicago | Naval Station Great Lakes | The Navy's largest training station; Navy recruits go through boot camp here |
| Northern Virginia | Fort Belvoir and Marine Corps Base Quantico | Both inside the Northern Virginia market; neither site states a personnel figure |
| Dallas-Fort Worth | NAS JRB Fort Worth | Inside Fort Worth city limits |
Navy nuclear sailors separate from submarine and carrier homeports, most of them outside our nine markets: Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Connecticut, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Washington, Naval Base Point Loma, San Diego and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Commissioning work travels, so a technician leaving Kings Bay or Groton can start on a Northern Virginia or Atlanta site without moving.
Hiring impact
For employers, the cheapest fix is in the posting. Name the military backgrounds that qualify (Navy nuclear ET, EM and MM, Air Force electrical power production, Army prime power), accept experience in place of a degree, and say that NFPA 70E and OSHA training can be completed after hire. Then take a SkillBridge intern: up to 180 days of a technician's time before you make an offer.
For veterans, the first commissioning job is usually a technician or junior engineer role with heavy travel. The pay for that level is on our commissioning pay ranges page, and we recruit for these roles. Tell us about your rating and the work you want through the commissioning candidate form.
Method and limits
- Postings: the 46 postings in our October 2026 commissioning pay set, each re-read on 2026-10-29. 42 were readable; 4 were closed or could not be matched to the same posting. Counts are over the 42. A posting counts as naming military experience only when it says military service counts toward the experience required.
- Navy duties and training come from navy.com rating pages. The commissioning fit column is our reading, based on what commissioning roles test and sign off on.
- The crosswalk table lists only entries we could read on O*NET this month.
- Programs were found on official and employer pages in October 2026; cohort dates and openings change, and the list is not every program.
- Installation figures are as each base states them and are not separation counts.
Questions
- Can a Navy nuclear technician become a data center commissioning engineer?
- Yes. Navy nuclear electronics technicians, electrician's mates and machinist's mates train for about 18 months before their first sea tour (A School, Nuclear Power School and prototype training on an operating reactor) and then run, test and maintain reactor plant electrical, electronic and mechanical systems. That lines up with electrical, controls and mechanical commissioning. What they usually add is data center equipment experience and civilian safety credentials such as NFPA 70E.
- Do data center commissioning jobs ask for military experience?
- Rarely. Of 42 data center commissioning postings we read in October 2026, 33 mention veterans, but 31 of those only in equal opportunity language. 1 names military experience as qualifying experience, and 0 mention Navy nuclear training, SkillBridge or a security clearance.
- Which companies run SkillBridge programs for data center jobs?
- We found 6 veteran or SkillBridge programs for data center roles on official and employer pages in October 2026: Microsoft Military Datacenter Pathway, Hiring Our Heroes Datacenter Pathway, with Microsoft, Amazon Military Fellowships, DLB Associates SkillBridge, InPwr SkillBridge, Equinix SkillBridge Fellowship. Each is linked on this page.
