How much does a commissioning manager or lead cost?
In our October 2026 set of 12 U.S. postings that state an annual range, the median posted range for a commissioning manager or lead runs from $141K to $214K. The lowest posted minimum was $120K and the highest posted maximum was $292K. These are base salary ranges from job postings, before per diem or bonus.
The commissioning manager job page describes the role.
What does a commissioning agent (CxA) cost?
In our October 2026 set of 5 U.S. postings that state an annual range, the median posted range for a commissioning agent runs from $84K to $140K. The lowest posted minimum was $80K and the highest posted maximum was $182K. These are base salary ranges from job postings, before per diem or bonus. Pay varies by metro and by whether the CxA works for the owner, a commissioning firm or a contractor.
The commissioning agent job page explains what the role covers.
Are commissioning roles hourly or salaried?
Both. Of the 48 postings in our October 2026 pay set, 10 were hourly, mostly staffing agency and contract roles. Most data center commissioning roles we recruit for are six-month contract-to-hire with heavy travel, paid hourly with per diem on top.
Per diem, housing, overtime and conversion terms are covered in commissioning pay, travel and contract terms.
Timing
When should we hire a commissioning agent?
Open the CxA search first, between pre-design and the end of design development, so the CxA is in place for the first factory witness test. Have the CxA lead identified before Level 3 starts. A CxA hired after the general contractor has started its commissioning plan ends up reviewing decisions they can no longer change.
The hiring timeline by build stage shows where commissioning fits with the other roles.
When should commissioning engineers, controls engineers and startup technicians start?
Commissioning leadership starts before the test scripts are written, controls engineers before checkout begins, and startup technicians in the hiring wave before energization. Set each start date by working back from the turnover date.
Why are experienced commissioning people hard to find?
People only learn commissioning on live, energized projects. Most qualified candidates are booked on a named project when you call and become free when that project finishes, so the search should start before you need them on site.

Roles and levels
Is a commissioning engineer the same as a commissioning agent?
No. The commissioning engineer runs the tests. The CxA owns the commissioning plan and process, often on the owner's behalf. On smaller projects one person may do both.
Who leads Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning?
The commissioning agent writes the scripts, directs the tests and signs off the results. Contractors, controls technicians and vendors operate the equipment, and the owner and operations staff witness.
Each level is explained in commissioning levels L1 to L5.
Do we need an owner-side CxA if our general contractor provides commissioning?
Most programs end up with both. The contractor's commissioning team delivers the building and the owner-side CxA accepts it. Without an owner-side CxA, the contractor checks its own work right when schedule pressure is highest.
Who is hiring commissioning people right now?
In our October 2026 pay set, 14 of 48 postings came from data center owners and hyperscalers and 15 from staffing agencies. The rest came from commissioning firms, general contractors and other employers.
Projects that will need commissioning teams are listed in our project trackers for Northern Virginia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, Atlanta, Columbus, Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Hillsboro.
Travel and terms
How much travel do data center commissioning jobs require?
Of the 21 postings in our October 2026 pay set that state a travel percentage, 18 list 50% or more. Several list 75%, and one says 100% on site.
Should commissioning roles be contract or full time?
Most data center commissioning roles we recruit for are six-month contract-to-hire. Put the conversion terms, per diem and travel in writing before outreach so candidates can compare offers.
Screening
How do we interview a commissioning lead?
Ask which levels they led and which they only witnessed, and ask to see a script they wrote and what system it was for. For Level 4 and 5 leads, ask them to walk through a UPS functional test or an integrated systems test they ran, including the load, the readings and what failed.
Use our interview questions for L4 and L5 leads, with strong answers and red flags for each.
Is QCxP certification required?
It confirms baseline knowledge of the commissioning process and its terms. It says nothing about which levels the person has run on live projects, so use it as a first filter and make the decision on project history.
Where do commissioning technicians come from?
Many come from electrical and HVAC trades, military technical roles and electrical testing work such as NETA field testing. Those who learn to write and run Level 3 to 5 tests move up to commissioning engineer.
We wrote career guides for electricians, HVAC technicians, military technicians and NETA technicians.
Can we train commissioning people internally instead of hiring?
You can train people for Level 1 to 3 work over a few delivery cycles. Owning Level 4 and 5 takes repeated integrated systems testing at load, and most owners don't run enough projects to build that in time for a live schedule.
