Rounds, readings, filter and belt PMs, escorting vendors, ticket hygiene. You work under a procedure and someone senior signs the switching.

You own switching under an approved MOP, run generator and UPS testing, respond first to alarms, and train the junior bench.

Data center technician jobs, answered
- What does a data center technician actually do?
- You keep the critical plant running: rounds and readings on UPS, switchgear, generators, CRAH and chilled water, alarm response, planned preventive maintenance, escorting vendors during work on live systems, and writing the log entries that let the next shift pick up cleanly. On colocation and hyperscale floors the work also includes rack, stack and structured cabling deployments.
- What do data center technicians get paid?
- Across the markets we recruit in, entry to mid-level technicians land roughly $58,000 to $85,000 base, lead and senior critical environment technicians $85,000 to $115,000, and contract roles $32 to $52 per hour. Night, weekend and on-call differentials sit on top of base, and they are often the difference between two otherwise similar offers.
- Can I get a data center technician job with no data center experience?
- Yes, and it is the most common way in. Navy nuclear and shipboard electrical, Air Force power production, building automation, commercial HVAC service, electrical apprenticeship and hospital facilities backgrounds all transfer. What employers screen for is whether you have worked on energized equipment under a procedure and can prove it in specifics.
- Which certifications matter most?
- NFPA 70E and CPR/first aid are usually required rather than optional. After that, employers weight OSHA 30, EPA 608, a state electrical or HVAC license, and vendor training on the switchgear, UPS or BMS platform on site. A degree is rarely the gate.
- What are the shifts really like?
- Most sites run 12-hour rotating shifts on a two-two-three or panama pattern, some run four tens with on-call. Expect nights in the rotation, expect to be paged during a maintenance window, and ask in interviews how deep the bench is, thin benches mean cancelled days off.
- Where are the most technician jobs right now?
- Northern Virginia and Dallas-Fort Worth carry the largest volume, with Phoenix, Columbus, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Chicago and Hillsboro growing fast against a thinner local bench, which is where relocation and referral bonuses show up.
