Hiring strategy

Where liquid cooling technicians come from

Direct-to-chip cooling is new in most data centers. Schneider Electric's research team describes distributing coolant to racks as very new to most facility teams, so few candidates have years of it. The people with the least to learn already run pumps, heat exchangers and water chemistry somewhere else.

Navy nuclear

Machinist's mates and electrician's mates from the nuclear Navy have run pumps, heat exchangers and reactor plant water chemistry under written procedures, around the clock. A 24/7 data center runs on the same kind of written procedures. Gap: commercial BAS platforms and the EPA 608 card. Reach them before they separate through DoD SkillBridge, which lets service members work with a civilian employer in their last months of service.

Hospital plants

Hospital central plant operators and plant engineers run chillers, boilers and hydronic loops in a building that can't go down, and they log rounds for inspectors. Gap: glycol coolant limits and IT vendor boundaries. Their professional association is ASHE, the American Society for Health Care Engineering.

Pharma utilities

Techs who run purified water systems in pharma plants test conductivity, chase bacteria and document everything. That is most of what keeping a PG25 loop healthy looks like. Gap: chillers at data center scale. ISPE chapters are a good place to find them.

Union trades

Union chiller techs and pipefitters already service the chillers and piping these halls use. Expect a pay conversation: Carrier's union data center chiller tech postings run $38 to $76 an hour, including Dallas. Gap: 24/7 shift work at one site after years of service calls.

Colo techs

Critical facilities techs at air-cooled colocation sites already work under change control and emergency procedures. Gap: the liquid side itself. Of these five groups, they need the least training.

Pay

Posted pay runs from $29.07 to $39.42 an hour on a JLL critical facilities posting in Cincinnati to $57.50 to $65.91 at the top of Amazon's engineering operations technician bands (posting censuses read September and October 2026). Candidates from these backgrounds will compare total pay, overtime and shift differential included.

Candidates

If you're in one of these jobs and want to move into liquid cooling: get EPA 608 Universal, learn the PG25 limits (glycol 24.5 to 27.5%, the pH band, filter sizes), and read the OCP PG25 guideline once. In an interview, talk about the chemistry you've tested and the procedures you've followed.
