Controls engineers build the BMS that operations staff use to watch the plant for years after turnover. Candidates usually know one or two platforms well, and a keyword search on 'BMS' won't tell you which.

Controls and BMS engineer screening for data centers
A data center controls engineer configures the BAS/BMS and EPMS layer: logic, graphics, alarming, trending and integration across BACnet, Modbus and vendor platforms. There are few of them because the skill is learned on live critical facilities. Screen by platform: ask whether the candidate has configured Niagara or EcoStruxure on a live site. A resume line that says 'BMS experience' doesn't answer that.
Screening questions
Nearly every facilities resume mentions BMS. Ask which platform the candidate configured, whether they wrote logic or only monitored it, and whether they have done point-to-point checkout on a live critical environment. Few candidates can say yes to all three.
Then ask about protocols. Integration work means getting BACnet, Modbus and SNMP to hold up under load, getting EPMS and BMS readings to match, and setting alarms that are worth answering at 3 a.m. Candidates who have done this give specifics right away.

- Whether they configured the system or only monitored it
- Point-to-point checkout discipline on live critical environments
- EPMS and BMS integration, including alarms and trending
Source industries
Good candidates also come from industrial automation, semiconductor facilities, pharmaceutical plants and hospital infrastructure, where a controls mistake can stop a process or hurt someone. Commercial building automation experience transfers in part. Those candidates still have to learn mission critical redundancy and how much more a bad change costs in a data center.
Turnover causes
Controls engineers leave sites where nobody maintains what they built, where every change needs a contractor, or where the job is written as support to commissioning. Write the job so the engineer owns the BMS.

- Controls engineer pay follows demand from industrial automation and BAS platform employers. Commissioning agent pay follows project schedules. Benchmark both against the specific companies you would recruit from in your metro.
- Can a strong commercial BAS technician convert to data centers?
- Yes, given time. Platform skills transfer. Redundancy, change control and the cost of a bad point take time on a live site to learn. Hire them into a team with an experienced controls lead, and fill your first controls role with someone who has data center experience.
- Should controls report to operations or engineering?
- Either works if one person clearly owns the BMS after turnover. When nobody does, the data drifts and the next commissioning cycle starts from bad data.
