Operations, critical facilities, commissioning, construction and design each hire people with different backgrounds. This guide covers how to get into each one and what it pays.

The five career tracks in data centers
There are five distinct career tracks in data centers: operations, critical facilities engineering, commissioning, construction delivery, and design and engineering. Operations is the easiest to enter and needs no degree. Critical facilities and commissioning ranges below start higher than operations for the same years of experience. Construction delivery offers the highest absolute ceiling on large programs. Design and engineering requires a degree and usually a PE.
Five tracks
All five work on the same buildings. Operations runs them, critical facilities maintains the plant, commissioning tests it, construction builds it and design engineers draw it.
- Operations: technicians, shift leads, site managers. Easiest entry, shift work, no degree needed.
- Critical facilities: engineers and managers owning UPS, generators, switchgear and cooling. Trades or military entry.
- Commissioning: tests that the building performs at load before handover. Heavy travel and high pay for the years of experience.
- Construction delivery: project managers, superintendents, MEP coordinators. Highest ceiling on big programs.
- Design and engineering: electrical and mechanical design, degree plus PE, office based.
Entry routes
Military electronics, power and nuclear backgrounds convert into operations and critical facilities immediately. Electrical and HVAC trades convert into critical facilities and, with startup exposure, into commissioning. IT and help desk experience converts into operations. Commercial construction experience converts into delivery roles.
If you are open on direction, start in operations and build toward critical facilities or commissioning.
Pay by track
Planning ranges from current US searches. Northern Virginia, the Bay Area and Hillsboro run above these; San Antonio and Columbus below.
- Operations: $52,000 entry to $190,000 at data center manager
- Critical facilities: $105,000 to $145,000 engineer, $150,000 to $200,000 manager
- Commissioning: $110,000 engineer to $250,000+ CxA lead
- Construction delivery: $85,000 project engineer to $240,000 project director
- Design and engineering: $95,000 to $185,000 depending on discipline and licensure
Hiring signals
Hiring managers in every track look for hands-on work you can describe in detail and a record of following procedures in a live environment. The work is tied to a site, so say clearly which metro you will work in.
- Quantify scope: MW, systems, number of halls, uptime tier
- Name the procedures and systems you personally touched
- Be explicit about relocation, travel tolerance and shift availability
- Keep certifications current, but lead with executed work

- Commissioning and senior construction delivery pay the most, with CxA leads and project directors commonly above $195,000. Commissioning pays the most for the years of experience because few people have done the work.
- How do I start a career in a data center with no experience?
- Enter through operations as a data center technician. Employers hire on reliability, procedure discipline and a relevant hands-on background such as military electronics, IT support, electrical or HVAC work. Data center experience is not required at entry level.
- Are data center jobs stable?
- Existing sites are staffed around the clock even when construction slows, so operations and critical facilities roles tend to be stable.
- Do data center jobs require a degree?
- Operations, critical facilities and most commissioning roles do not. Construction delivery sometimes prefers a construction management degree but accepts field experience. Design and engineering roles generally require a degree and often a PE license.
