Data center career FAQs
The questions candidates ask me most before they apply to a data center role.
- What qualifications do data center technician jobs require?
- Most critical facilities operator and technician roles want 2–5 years of hands-on mechanical, electrical or HVAC experience — military nuclear/electrician backgrounds, trade school, or prior UPS/generator/chiller work all count. NFPA 70E and a clean switching record matter more than a degree.
- How much do data center jobs pay in the US?
- Critical facilities technicians typically land $75K–$120K plus shift differential, commissioning agents $120K–$180K, and MEP or electrical design engineers $130K–$200K. Northern Virginia, Phoenix and Dallas pay at the top of those bands.
- Which US markets are hiring data center talent fastest?
- Northern Virginia, Dallas–Fort Worth, Phoenix, Columbus, Atlanta and Salt Lake City are absorbing the most headcount right now, driven by AI campus builds and multi-phase expansions.
- Do I need experience in a data center to get hired?
- Not always. Operators regularly hire from power generation, pharma, semiconductor fabs, hospitals and the Navy — anywhere you've run 24/7 critical infrastructure under procedure. I position that background so it reads as directly relevant.
- Are these roles posted by Critical Path Search?
- No. This board tracks live openings posted by operators, EPCs and engineering firms so you can see where demand is moving. My retained and confidential searches are never posted publicly.
- Why talk to a recruiter before applying directly?
- Cold applications go into an ATS queue. I know which hiring managers are actually moving, what the comp band really is, and how to frame your switching and commissioning experience — and I can put you in front of the searches that never get posted.
